GET YOUR GMRS LICENSE

  •   A simple step-by-step guide for new GMRS radio users
  • GMRS = General Mobile Radio Service
  • A GMRS license is required to operate a GMRS station. The FCC's individual GMRS license is normally valid for 10 years, and there is no licensing examination.
  • 1. Watch the Instructional Video Watch: How to Get a GMRS Radio License. The video walks through the FCC licensing process.
  • 2. Create or Confirm Your FCC Account. Go to FCC CORES (Commission Registration System). FCC CORES login / registration. Create an FCC Username if you do not already have one.  Create or locate your FCC Registration Number (FRN). Your FRN is the identifier used for FCC licensing transactions. Keep your FCC Username, password, and FRN available while completing the GMRS application.
  • 3. Apply for Your GMRS License in ULS. Open the FCC Universal Licensing System (ULS). FCC ULS License Manager  Sign in using your FCC credentials and FRN. Choose the option to file a new application and select General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS). Complete the personal information and required certifications carefully.  Submit the application and pay the FCC fee shown by the system. The FCC adopted a $35 application fee for personal licenses; always verify the amount displayed at the time you file. There is no written or on-air test for a GMRS license.
  • 4. After You Apply Watch your ULS application status for the grant of your license and your assigned call sign. Once granted, save or print a copy of your license and record your call sign with your radio equipment. Operate your GMRS radios according to FCC Part 95 rules. A GMRS license authorizes the licensee's station(s); the licensee is responsible for proper operation. Your immediate family members may operate the licensed GMRS station under the licensee's authority, subject to FCC rule
